DuH -- I can see your points on a lot of stuff but the thing that struck me about this fest was the quality and the diversity of the bands -- you had everything from "generic punk", to epic sounding sololess 1 minute death metal songs, to neo-Career Suicide trash, to a band that brought to mind Zero Boys, to a hardcore band that wrote really creative driving songs, to a sorta - Schlongy - spazz out band. The bill was all over the map and really surprisingly high quality (for those of us who love the diversity of what "punk" can mean). In many ways it excited me to see so many bands approaching punk from so many different directions -- it did sort of remind me of how punk used to be a wide net that could encompass anything from Bad Brains to Big Boys to MDC to the Minutemen to Husker Du and on and on and on. Not that most of these bands were living in the past -- most were kids finding their own way. The only low point of the show was Dr. Know who was basically mining their past and seemed not too thrilled to be there (whereas the bands that hadn't been around for 25 years -- either as a band or as human beings) tore it up regardless of the low turnout.
The show excited me musically -- it was just a shame to see the dismal turnout. Reminded me more than a little of the best Loft shows that no one would come out to (or if they came out, they would sit in the parking lot drinking while the best bands were playing to a dozen people upstairs.)
:I bet is has something to with the fact that everybody knows that an all day mucho punk bands show really sucks ass to go to....so what if the ancient Dr. KNow is playing...the fact is that after 4 bands one's brain does not give a shit any more about what the next awesome punk band is going to sound like....its going to sound loud and annoying unless one is drunk and then it doesn't matter who plays as long as its fast and loud...for instance the reason that the "skipped by Sacramento snooze and refuse" Operation Restore Max Freedom was pretty successful was the fact that there were all kinds of bands playing....your brain could easily shift around all of the music ......and on another note the price (not included on any posters I saw around town) was too high...I understand that the colonial theater is expensive and everyone needed to get paid but c'mon punks don't have 15 bucks for a show....it should have been spread out over the week with three to five bands a night for 5 bucks ..... in different places(like noise fest used to be) that way there's not a huge loss when the band's don't bring more than their girlfriends......

::Could be the $$$, but $12/15 seems reasonable to me for 8-10 bands per night including a "name" headliner (Dr.Know, Verbal Abuse). It was really sad how few people were there -- the bands were great but Colonial was like a huge empty cave. From what I could figure around 2/3 of the audience was the other bands. Bummer
::
:::isnt it cost much $$ per day?
::::Hmmm-- why did no one (or almost no one) show up to the first couple of days of messyfest -- some of the best punk bands I've seen in Sac in a long time?
