:Cheveu--that's "hair" en Français--are a Paris band inspired by such diverse influences that they create a wholly other brand of music which is extremely difficult to classify, but has very wide appeal. The guitar is soaked in the raunch of garagepunk and occasionally dabbles in surf. Low-tech keyboards and drum machine recall the darkwave and electro sounds from the early 1980's. On their faster songs, the propulsive beats have the ornate snareshot patterns and hip hop-sourced double triplets of the drum 'n' bass/jungle arm of techno. The vocals trespass through African-American talk-blues and toasting traditions before hastening up to a nervous speed-rap in a husky and unmistakably French accent. Perhaps the most contemporary element employed by Cheveu is the vocal effects processing that is used famously by modern psychedelic groups such as Animal Collective and Gang Gang Dance; whereas these bands use vocal effects for enchanting and entrancing the listener with diffuse abstractions, Cheveu often use the Boss Line 6 pedal to push excitement into mania, much like the progressive trance genre of electronic music when its pioneers first turned melodies into unstable isotopes in liquid form. The fidelity, and attitude of Cheveu is still caked in scuzz and oozing sleaze, and so their fanbase to date has centered in certain circles of music that is still called punk rock, but the flavors of electronic music and even French pop music are still distinct.

:Tyvek are an absolutely endearing happy, scrappy funtime band whose debut 7" last year flipped minds with its authentic flavor of Messthetics-era British DIY circa 1978-1980 so much that it was such a surprise to learn that they are actually from today, and with songs begging to know "Can you drive a Honda like a can drive Honda (4x)?" and dissing on the Ford Escort, it was also surprising to learn that they are from Detroit. This is primo snappy upbeat punk with a jangle-pop heart.

:(P.S. Epic house show the following night (Sat., May 19) at my place an hour(-ish) east in Davis, the DAM House, will feature baguette swordfights, beret/striped shirt ensemble pageant, DIY pantomimes, DIY Jerry Lewis posters, French fries, French dip, keg of French beer, and more ridiculousness that we specialize in at our shows bi-monthly at this location since 1989...email me if you want info on particulars, and especially if you are gonna be wearing a beret of wanna be one of our mimes (seriously, I want at least two people willing to be so unamerican to wear leotards and paint their faces!). This will rage from 7-10 p.m. and will include free dinner (menu announced a week prior, all diets accomodated) and free beer to buzz (BYO to go from buzz to beyond), and at 10, some will stay to party, but most will wanna march in procession four blocks to where Porest will be playing with a new band featuring two Negativland members, which the venue is holding back to 10:15 in the interest of making this the most cooperative see-'em-both double-booked night this small city's seen since the last time some French synthpunk legends ripped through here in Metal Urbain. Totally justifiable as a reason to drive or catch a ride to Davis. Free crash-space placement is available if you contact me. We have a different brand of fun here that you might have trouble actually imagining. I'm not insinuating that you must be lame; I'm just saying that in Davis, we are aware of the stigma of lameness that pervades our entire valley (however wrongly), and that here in particular, we do ridiculous things that over-compensate for that, such as serving 90 homemade falafel burgers with our own house recipe of "goddess sauce" and herbed goat cheese at our last house show.)
