in the long term dude did much more good than harm in terms of public awareness, conservation, and research. i mean, if the worst thing that happens to a snake/crocodile/wombat is some jackass picking him up for 5 minutes the animal would probably consider it a decent week. and then there's the chance the land he lives on would have been developed had it not been for irwin.

i don't know why people feel so vindicated when nature kills someone. same with timothy treadwell. you don't have to be surprised, or even remorseful, but there's no reason to be a dick about it. dude's not even buried yet.

:Oh man,
:I've been waiting for this shit to happen for a long time. I would watch silent broadcast of this show while at work, and wondered, "Why doesn't he leave these poor creatures alone?" I would hate for someone to roust me out of my solitude and be poked & proded with cameras hoisted at me. What a dick.
:Everyday I waited for a crocodile or snake to bite the shit out him and nothing ever happened, except one time he got bit on the web of skin between his thumb and forefinger by a baby croc. Good job.

:Statement from Billy Campbell, President, Discovery Networks, U.S. Discovery Communications, Inc.
:
:Our entire company is deeply saddened by the tragic and sudden loss of Steve Irwin, the Crocodile Hunter. Steve was beloved by millions of fans and animal lovers around the world and was one of our planet's most passionate conservationists. He has graced our air since October 1996 and was essential in building Animal Planet into a global brand.
:
:Steve was killed during a filming expedition on the Great Barrier Reef. While we are still collecting specific details, it was a rare accident in which Steve swam over a stingray and was stung by its barb in his chest. A doctor on board Croc One, Steve's research vessel, was unable to resuscitate Steve and by the time he was reached by the rescue helicopter he had passed away.
