THIS WEDNESDAY NIGHT::::12-14-05
TERA MELOS
SILENTIST (from portland, ex-get hustle)
THE BETTER TO SEE YOU WITH (portland)
10pm sharp...fools foundation...19th and k, sacramento...$5
the show starts after lost is over on your tv, but ends before too late. i still haven't heard the better to see you with yet, but mark from silentist described them to me as being a cross between harry pussy and antioch arrow, which was good enough for me. they do have some web presence too you can check out:
http://thebettertoseeyouwith.com/
also, someone who saw them in the bay area this past week had this to say:
"The Better to See You With opened the official show with a series of
one-minute pieces of power violence under the influence of Orthrelm and
Arab on Radar. Short, fast and loud, but also fairly loose and jangly at
times. My favorite parts were, of course, when the drummer broke free of
the strings and wound me up with rhythmic dissonance, then relieved the
tension with a wall of grind noise."
i think i like the sound of that. silentist has played here a few times already, and the last time in particular was really good to my ears. mark used to play pianer in the band get hustle, silentist is kind of like what he did with that except he went to the gym and worked out a bunch and then a bucket of pig blood got dumped on him and someone turned a strobe light on and then he started a band all by himself that is of the blackest of metal stripes. here's what that other guy said about mark's set the other night, i think it explains it better:
"Silentist pulled off the one man show way better than I expected. One
guy playing drums and singing along with a tape of distorted piano and
probably some other sounds (or else some really distorted piano). He
managed to stay perfectly in sync with the tape through the whole show,
including tempo changes, seemingly static sections and all sorts of
shit. Secret click track? I don't think so. Seems like a sign of mental
illness to me. Well, it seems to work for him, but I don't think I could
function in that way. He actually did go slightly out of sync a couple
times, but this resulted in a cool Steve Reich/Captain Beefheart out of
phase sound. I caught a Magma vibe from this guy. Epic rock with a
singing drummer. Atonal piano lines repeated and modified, forming
grandiose song arcs. Almost a Nancarrow aesthetic in the piano lines.
Very cool compositions, interesting spectacle and some brutal screams at
key moments. I saw an Emperor sticker on one of his boxes, which I think
explains a lot."
silentist is also on the internet: http://www.celestialgang.com, go check it out.
tera melos is young dudes from here. songs do the fast/slow/short/long/loud/quiet all over the place thing while the dudes are jumping off the highest thing they can climb on top of and doing backflips and swinging guitars around like windmills really fast while still managing to play the songs. you can check some web cams here: http://www.teramelosmusic.com/
also, go to the jyrk jam at fools foundation on tuesday because my friends d. yellow swans are playing and they are rad.
