FRRIIIII...CROONER'S DELIGHT!
Posted by DJ Rick on 2008-09-22 12:53:05am

My girlfriend put out his first record last year to rave reviews. He's nailed it in live performance at the Cypress House and Delta of Venus in Davis. Now, with an awesome new album in tow, Mattress is coming to Sacramento for the first time ever. Mattress is one man, Rex from Portland, who grew up in the casino/lounge capital of Las Vegas, and his style of crooning does indeed reflect that. If you were to plot his style of voice and charismatic showmanship on a graph, it would be equidistant from three points being Nick Cave, Alan Vega of Suicide, and Dean Martin. His musical accompaniment is rather like minimal wave gone tussin-drunk. This guy's songs are captivating, he's really unafraid to sing, and he puts on a great show!

Speaking of a fella who's unafraid to sing, Dead Western made this wonderful new LP called "Soften Your Screams into Sings" for the KDVS Recordings label, and it sounds and looks absolutely beautiful. Take Mattress' advice..."You gotta church that shit!" Once you receive Dead Western's spirit, you will be a changed human being.

Sister Crayon is a young new up'n-comin' gal from Sacto blending the surreal folk/psych as if Mazzy Star's Hope Sandoval dove into a stack of Wire mags and came up caked in New Weird pixiedust. A real sweet lilter!

Green Green is my buddy Andrew from Folsom who plays the rawest weirdfolk around. He kicked off the Jeremy Jay show here last month and knocked some people's socks off with his unwitting charm, ruthlessly funny heckler pwnage, and slaying cover of the Supreme's "Baby Love". A rare and authentic talent, this guy!

Please let me see you and your friends there by the dozens, and come hungry for pizza, salads...and oh, yes it's finally meatball sandwich season! They make a really fine one at Luigi's!

Thanks,
Rick
