Y'know how we in Sacto always got to see the old ex-Popular Shapes lineup of the Intelligence at their loosest, usually after just one or two practices because the bandmates lived in San Francisco and Lars was in Seattle? And then after a few days of touring--and surely by the time they circled back to play Davis--they'd be totally tight and slaying? And then, of course, there was that one show at Fools Foundation with the lineup including that just didn't pop. Lars had to carry that lineup almost singlehandedly. The rhythm section were total funblockers, though.
Well, now Lars has been with the same lineup for well over a year. There's tightness where it needs to be...and just the right amount. There's boyfriend/girlfriend synchronicity, and this is especially dazzling when they sing together. There's an extra guitarist playing all the cute little leads, freeing up Lars to be an even better frontman. Drummer is perfect. This band minus the extra guitarist played last year at the Delta of Venus. They were pretty good then. Then we saw 'em in Seattle during the Mayyors tour and they were really great. But last night in SF at the Your Flesh magazine invitational event, they were really outstanding.
There is a fun surprise at the end of the show during "Cheer Up Switch".....I don't wanna totally spoil it, but lemme just say that it's a cool little homemade vintage volts spectacle.
Do not miss this show on Tuesday night at Luigi's Fun Garden with the Standard Tribesmen and English Singles.
I also really need this show to be as big as it can be for the future of shows at the Fun Garden. It runs from 8 to 11 on schedule. $5 only. The Intelligence played for $12 in SF and were totally worth it.
