“Oplan Banignay: the assassination of Ninoy Aquino JR.

The film first narrated how Ninoy Aquino was jailed for his opposition to the Marcos administration, but had fallen sick with hart problems. While he was still in jail he ran for the congressional seat of manila against Imelda Marcos, in 1979. As the major hart surgery center of the Philippines had been constructed by Imelda, it was seen as under the control of the Marcos administration. Ferdinand Marcos knew that if the operation were to go poorly it would appear as if he had arranged it. He allowed Aquino to travel to the United States for the surgery, on the condition that he would not speak poorly to the press about the democratic situation.
Of course, Aquino could not keep this deal, he had received a fellowship at hared and spoke to the media at length about democratic reforms. After three years abroad he said he wanted to return home for a conversation with his “brother” (Aquino and Marcos had been members of the same college fraternity). Aquino felt that it was his responsibility to ask Marcos face to face to hold free elections.
After switching planes and visas several times he was assassinated at the airport by persons that remain vague to this day.
One thing that struck me very much about the film was the time magazine reporters footage of Senator Aqunio advising the media to have their cameras ready as “three or four minutes, and it could be over. I will not be able to talk to you”.
He seemed to be completely resigned to the possibility, as if he was aware of the political effect it would have. He certainly knew it was a possibility that he would be killed, as Imelda had offered him a bribe not to return, and told him that someone would try to kill him. Although it was essentially a Threat, she tried to couch it in a theory of communist plot to incriminate her husband.
The film made Aquino appear heroic, and perhaps that is how a nation with a strong belief in fate itself saw him as well. He seemed like a man on a suicide mission, a warrior facing certain death. Although he was not going into literal combat, it seems like it would take the same security of belief that your death would the most for your cause, in the face of a seemingly invincible enemy. I was also reminded of Gandhi being run over by horses, or American civil rights leaders having dogs trained on them. He appeared to know that were he to be killed, it would achieve something towards the goal he was working on in life.
The outrage over the assassination did lead to the mass opposition that prompted Marcos to declare a snap election and ultimately loose power. Marcos at the time denied involvement, blaming the communists, with Imelda claiming the United States government had assonated Aquino to discredit Marcos.
The official story was that a Lt. Gamlon, 5.4 had assassinated Marcos alone. The bullet hole in the back of his head was facing downward and Galmon was supposed to have shot from behind the stairs. The opposition magazine Mr. & Mrs. covered the flaws in this theory at length.
The treatment of the questioning of the official story seemed to take a much more jocular mocking tone then That of the Kennedy assassination, another major political killing given a major media profile and questionable actors. The series of cartoons the film showed, of a man on a pogo stick, a man on a parachute, in platform shoes, etcetera, would have been seen as shockingly disrespectful to American audiences. I think perhaps this attitude is a way of expressing jaded outrage over 20 years of the Marcos regime, as expressed through the good-natured attitudes of the Filipino media.
Although Ferdinand and Imelda were seen as responsible, their must have been another mastermind under them. Those who are known to be involved have never admitted the full story or incriminated their superiors. The person in charge of the assassination must still have some government position or at least major political/economic clout.
