:I LOVE YOU!!
:
:Greetings Sacramento punk lovers!
:
:
:Once again, There are SO many great shows this coming weekend! You can see all the details over at myspace.com/sacramentopunkshows, but here's a few highlights:
:
:Thursday
:
:The weekend starts out with early with a show by the reunited Naked Raygun. For those who missed out, they were one of the Midwest's greatest bands in the 80's and they're back. Some of those hooks and woah-ho-hoahs will have you rethinking all that you ever thought pop punk was. I don't think they ever played Sacramento before and Thursday night they will be playing at the Distillery with The Swingin Utters, Shotbaker, and The Alibis. 2107 L St., 21 and over, 12 bucks. Supposed to start at 10, but everybody is saying get there early if you want to get in.
:
:Friday
:
:Starting real early Friday, at 5 pm is a FREE ALL AGES show featuring some of Sacramento's most dedicated punk bands at Inferno Pizza, 16th and Broadway. You can see The Disgusteens, Riot on Rosewood, Flower Violence, and Isonomy, all for free. Show up early! They want to end this one by 8 pm. Support all ages (and free shows) happening downtown.
:
:And then at 7 or so, it's over to Casa de Chaos for a houseshow of epic proportions put on by the Sacto Pyrate Punx. This show features the mighty and occasionally controversial Warkrime, Vacaville's great Crucial Cause, their touring mates C.O.P. from Los Angeles, plus the uncuT:Hunks which is Mick Mucus' new band so you know they'll be worth seeing. It's all ages, a measly $3 which all goes to the out of town bands and it happens on 21st Street between P and Q in the basement of one of those big houses. If you want to see the best of some of the kids who are inspired by early 80's hardcore and are taking those influences and building their own thing, go to this show, it's gonna be very good.
:
:Also on Friday there's a documentary about the 80's one-hit wonder OXO called Frank and Cindy showing at the ILWU Hall in West Sac, 600 F St., and Punk Rock Karaoke and the Helper Monkeys at the Blue Lamp later that night, as well as a couple of other shows in the area. But, if you are anywhere near downtown you should be at the two shows described about -- they are all ages, cheap (or free), only about a dozen blocks apart, and you can probably hit both of them in the same night and still be done by 10 or 11 which should allow you to get plenty of sleep for....
:
:Saturday
:
:which has something for just about everyone....
:
:In Old Sac, Melt Banana from Japan is playing with Iguanadon and Times of Desperation on a perfectly constructed bill. Melt Banana is just a totally wonderful wacked out band who can go from blast beats to noise collages and back in just a few seconds. Live, they are something to behold. Times of Desperation's "weed grind" is so much more than those two words would suggest -- their songs go all over the place, are uniquely constructed, and they are incredibly tight. Another band whose music will simultaneously make you think, surprise you, and tear your face off. A perfect local opener for Melt Banana. And, to round out the bill is the mighty Iguanadon, the fact that they are the most straightforward band on this bill lets you know just how wonderfully twisted (and good!) this show will be. It all goes down at the Speakeasy Lounge in Old Sac, 117 J St, 21 and over, $10.
:
:And yet, that Melt Banana show may not even be the best one of the night. Over at the Orangevale VFW is a massive all ages punk show featuring the Cobra Skulls with an all-star local linuep supporting them: The Secretions, Final Summation, Drastic Actions, Isonomy, and STD. The show celebrates the release of the new Secretions 7" on Gearhead Records (yay!), and brings the Cobra Skulls back to the area. If you haven't heard them, you should. A totally unique sounding punk band from Reno who play great catchy songs -- hard to describe music that is best summed up as "The Cobra Skulls" but they pull in some early 80's Southern California punk sounds, some rockabilly, and a bunch of other influences, mix it with great vocals, intelligent lyrics, and thrilling songwriting and come up with a fantastic sound. They just returned from an opening slot on a big East Coast tour with Against Me, Sage Francis, and World Inferno Friendship Society. The show is at 9426 Greenback Lane, Orangevale. Starts at 8, costs $8, and is all ages!
:But, that's not all.....
:Over in Woodland the Stag is having a great show with Harrington Saints, Psycho 78, and the Memphis Murder Men. Expect some rousing street punk and burnin' rock at this one. 506 Main St, Woodland, 21 and over.
:and finally there's a great punkrocknroll show over at On the Y with Blame Betty, Sex Rat, The Lemmies, and The Freex. 8 pm, $5, 21+, 670 Fulton Ave.
:
:Sunday
:
:And if you are still standing after all that, you can head over to On the Y and enjoy a quiet evening of thrashin and grinding metal with Scarecrow (members of Exhumed and Decapitated), Fueled by Fire (Metal Blade), Volitile, and Killgasm. 8 pm, 21+, $5.
:
:That should about do it -- more good stuff coming up soon including two great Buried in Hell Shows at On the Y and the mega matinee featuring Crime and a bunch of bands on Sunday, Dec. 16th, but more on all of that next week. Until then, if you want (or have) updates on shows go to myspace.com/sacramentopunkshows. While you are there, check out the blog with interviews, articles, and reviews about the local scene.
