stuff to do this weekend

Here's some good stuff happening this weekend in Sacramento -- both music and a couple of local/diy events to provide an alternative to corporate Christmas shopping madness at the mall.

Want to read a big interview with Mike Hood of the sacto Hoods? Well then, go check out the blog at myspace.com/sacramentopunkshows -- it's a good one.

On to this weekend's festivities:

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 30TH

You got your choice of at least three good shows...

Over at On the Y is the last Friday of the month mini-fest, Punk Rock Holocaust -- this one's got Riot on Rosewood, DCMS, The Infamous Swanks, Moonshine, The Lemmies, Drastic Actions, Inferno of Joy, and Butterface. It starts at 7 pm sharp (really) and runs past 1 am with all the bands playing 30 minute sets. Nice mix of punk, rock, rockabilly and more on this one. It's a 21 and over only show, costs $8, and you can find it at the 'Y' of Fulton and Munroe, near Fair Oaks. 670 Fulton Ave.

Downtown at the wonderful Java Lounge is an all-ages show featuring a reunion of The Knockoffs, the Boats (just back from tour), and Kevin Seconds and the Altruistics. Only $5, shows at 8, Java Lounge is at 2416 16th St, near 16th and Broadway. Support shows like this happening at the Java Lounge and we just might get more all ages punk rock downtown!

If thrashin' metal is what you are craving, hit the Distillery to see the recently reformed (and very good!) Dominion Fiend with Black Mackerel and M.D.L. 21 and over, starts at 10, I'd guess it's 5 bucks, 2107 L St.

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 1ST

All sorts of good stuff going on. First the "alternative holiday shopping events" -- since hopefully you've got someone in your life to buy Christmas presents for, you might as well try to buy them from cool creative folks and locally-owned businesses, so why don't you check out....

The Indie Sacramento Alternative Crafts Fair which takes place from 2-9 p.m. at the YWCA at 1122 17th St. downtown. This is a great place to check out very cool locally made stuff. This event will have a bunch of diy crafters selling their stuff, plus music, kids activities, demos and classes and more. Great stuff going on all day. Clothes, posters, jewelry, dolls, kar kulture stuff, cupcakes, and tons more stuff. The event is free, but they would appreciate a dollar donation. Bring cash to buy stuff..

And, over at 16th and Broadway from 5-10 p.m. is the big Midtown Monthly sponsored "Holiday Funraiser". There's going to be a BUNCH of bands playing at R5 Records including the Four Eyes, No Admission, Baby Grand and others, plus DJ's spinning cool tunes inside both Records and the Avid Reader. There will be tons of good deals at all the stores, a raffle, and the Sacred City Derby Girls will be collecting unwrapped toys or cash donations for the Salvation Army Christmas Project. The whole thing is all ages and free.

And, after all that shopping you will surely want to hear even more music,. If you want to stay in the area and hear an evening of "Acoustic Chaos", you can just head over to the Java Lounge and hear a bunch of punks playing acoustic music including The Secretions, No Admission, Eoin Anarchy and special guests including Tom of The Knockoffs, Brian of Hanover Saints, Tony of the Brodys and Bobby Jordan of Mission Satellite. Starts at 8, $5, all ages.

Another all ages show will be taking place at the Cool Cat Gallery, 918 24th St., Sacramento with The Common Men and Der Spazm, two very cool, post punky bands. 5 bucks starts at 8.

And, if it is pounding rock n roll you seek, try hitting the Stag in Woodland where The Lustkillers (with members from the Swingin Utters, Black Halos, Black Furies and Lords of the New Church!), Ghosthookers from San Francisco, and Maxxx will be making a gloriously unholy racket. 10 pm, 21 and over, 506 Main St.

So, get out of the house and enjoy a great weekend of good music and fun times. And then, over the next couple of weeks are a whole stack of fantastic shows coming our way including....
Dec. 6th -- Naked Raygun + Swingin Utters @ Distillery
Dec 7th -- Warkrime + Crucial Cause at a Casa De Chaos basement show
Dec. 8th -- Melt Banana / Cobra Skulls / Harrington Saints all playing shows on the same night!
Dec 15th -- Sabada Satanico with Psychosomatic and Head on Collision from St. Louis
Dec 16th -- Crime at the mega all ages matinee show at the Silk Bar.

and lots more to come. Stay tuned for more info, or just head over to myspace.com/sacramentopunkshows for all the details.

We sure are lucky to be living in a place where so many great bands grace us with their music (and there are so-many hard-working folks willing to put on their shows)!

Support them!

Here's too many flyers to look at....
